freudian slips

L came home from hanging out with my father the other day, plopped himself down on the couch, picked up his gorilla (his latest animal obsession) and while carefully studying it's silver back said, "pop-pop says he hopes he doesn't get laid." "um, what? what did pop-pop say?" "pop-pop said he doesn't want to get laid like everyone else at his work." "uh, do you mean laid-off? did he say laid-off, L?" "no (quite exasperated now), he said laid. you know, and not have a job anymore. he likes working." "oh, right. (whew, i don't have to choke back throwing up in my mouth a little after all) that's laid-off L. you should say the off part in the future, ok?" looking at me like i'm completely crazy as he walks down the hall, "ok, mom."

adolescent love

when i was a girl, i had a remarkably big crush on gene kelly. this was one of my most favorite dances of his. i especially loved how he incorporated the use of non-musical sounds, like the squeaky board and the newspaper into the music and the dance, building in intensity until you felt like you could jump onto the stage with him and dance your heart out.
